For #ShopSmall 2017: Is AVON a legitimate direct selling company? Or a pyramid scheme?

Small Business Saturday 2017Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday® and I am part of the Shop Small movement! I am here to promote my own small business as well as introduce direct selling as an avenue to start your own. But there are scammers in the direct selling industry and unsuspecting people get lured into pyramid schemes that take their hard-earned money.

If you are looking for an opportunity to work from home and have you heard pitches about earning bigs dollars, I’m here to tell you, first, it’s hard to distinguish legitimate work-at-home programs. And second, any “get rich quick” pitch should be viewed with caution. Pyramid schemes are illegal, and the vast majority of participants lose money. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, works to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace. Educate yourself and read the FTC’s Work-at-Home Businesses page and How to Know If It’s a Scam.

This is Boss Life | AvonHere’s what I do know. New Avon LLC is the leading social selling beauty company in North America, with independent sales Representatives across the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. New Avon’s product portfolio includes award-winning skincare, color cosmetics, fragrance and personal care products, featuring iconic brands such as ANEW, Avon Color, mark., and Skin So Soft, as well as fashion and accessories. Avon has a 130 year history of empowering women through economic opportunity, and the company also proudly supports the Avon Foundation for Women in its efforts to end breast cancer and domestic violence. Avon is a proud member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) and strongly supports their CODE OF ETHICS. The DSA’s Code of Ethics is a robust series of policies that every DSA member agrees to follow as condition of membership. It holds member companies accountable to policies that protect independent salespeople and consumers and encourages the entire marketplace for direct selling to meet these high standards.

In attempt to be fair and transparent, here are some basic Avon principles:

The Avon business model does not rely on nor does it encourage sales of inventory, training or business support materials between Representatives.
The core of our business model is Representatives selling our products to an end consumer. A representative’s compensation is tied to their sales. Representatives set their own hours as well as their sales goals, and their commissions are based on product sales.

Avon has reasonable return policies.
Representatives are not left holding excess inventory. Avon offers its customers 90 days from the date of purchase to return their product to their Avon Representative. Avon allows a Representative 120 days from the date of purchase to return a product.

Avon limits earnings to three generations.
The Avon Leadership opportunity offers rewards and bonuses for building your team and increasing sales. Avon offers opportunities and bonuses to expand Representatives earnings potential. Avon does not promise commissions on infinite sales rather promotes and incentivize Representatives based on their own sales and their teams sales.

When consumers have questions about direct selling, we say to them: At its best, direct selling is “I tried the product. I liked the product. I recommend it to a friend.” If you are considering entering direct sales (or ‘social selling’) here are three tips to remember:

Like the product! Make sure it’s a product you use and enjoy yourself. You will be selling to your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers.

Understand the product. All good direct selling/social selling companies will provide training and mentoring support. But you should not need to invest heavily in start-up training and marketing materials. You are in control of how many hours you want to put into your business. Direct selling is for those who possess a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Know who you are buying from and who is paying you. When ordering product for your customers, make sure you will be purchasing from the Company, not the individual who recruited you into selling. And that your earnings will be paid by the Company. Direct Selling companies that survive on recruiting new participants rather than retail sales are pyramid schemes.

Let me share my story. I’ve been a successful small business owner for 25+ years but was looking for a new opportunity to earn extra money. I chose Avon because it’s a company with a well-known name and I’ve been using Avon products since I was a teenager. I’m celebrating my eighth year anniversary selling Avon! I started by selling to family and friends but now sell through my online social networks. I have built a profitable beauty business. I reached President’s Club selling level four years in a row and Honor Society for the first time this year. I was also the top online seller for my district the last two years.

I’d love to tell you more! I can show you how to supplement your income or enjoy discounts on your own Avon purchases.  I’m looking for dedicated and motivated people interested in making money. Avon offers an earning potential competitive to other direct selling companies. I can answer your questions and concerns as well as give you everything you need to start your own work from home business! If you are interested in selling Avon’s world-class beauty products, contact me and I will show how to become an Avon Representative today! You can also begin your own Avon business, starting at just $25, and have what you need to begin selling within minutes.
